The Hidden Pigments of Every Autumn Leaf

Welcome to a 3D virtual gallery you can walk through in your browser, exploring the chemistry behind autumn's spectacular leaf colors.

Every green leaf is a factory powered by chlorophyll, but each autumn that pigment is actively dismantled so the plant can reclaim its nitrogen. The yellows and oranges were hidden underneath all along, masked by green. The reds, remarkably, are produced from scratch: anthocyanins are synthesised in dying leaves, a costly final act whose purpose science still debates.

Reds Built from Scratch

Unlike carotenoids, anthocyanins are not present during summer. They are actively manufactured in autumn as phosphate drains from the leaf and sugar breakdown shifts. Bright, cool days and chilly nights intensify their production. One leading theory holds that anthocyanins shield the leaf from light damage, letting the tree recover nitrogen more efficiently before the leaf falls.

The Cut: How Leaves Drop

At the base of each leaf stalk, a layer of cork cells called the abscission zone slowly seals the connection to the branch. Water and mineral flow into the leaf dwindles. The weakened cells finally break apart or burst with absorbed water, and the leaf falls. In some species, damaged or pest-infested leaves abscise early: leaves hosting three or more aphid galls are four times likelier to drop.

Green Fades, Yellow Emerges

Carotenoids, the pigments behind the color of carrots, egg yolks, and daffodils, sit inside leaves all summer, hidden by chlorophyll's intense green. As autumn shortens daylight hours, chlorophyll breaks down faster than it is replaced. The green mask lifts. Yellows and oranges appear in hickories, aspens, birches, and maples. These pigments are the dominant color in roughly 15 to 30 percent of tree species.
