Why People Choose Plants

Welcome to a 3D virtual gallery you can walk through in your browser, exploring why millions of people are choosing plant-based diets.

A single fact frames the case: over 80% of all global farmland is used to rear livestock, yet shifting to plant-based diets could pull 100 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere by century's end. The word vegan was coined in 1944 by Donald and Dorothy Watson, marking what they called "the beginning and end of vegetarian."

What the Body Gains

Vegetarian diets are linked to a 15% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Vegan diets may reduce total cancer incidence by 15%. Plant-based diets also improve weight control, blood pressure, insulin resistance, and fasting glucose in obese people. The American College of Lifestyle Medicine stated that whole, plant-based foods can achieve remission of type 2 diabetes when used as a primary intervention.

The Land We Could Free

Around 35% of all habitable land worldwide is used to rear animals for food. A 2022 study in Nature Food found that if high-income nations switched to plant-based diets, vast tracts could return to their natural state. A 2023 study found a vegan diet reduced land use by 75%, water pollution by 75%, wildlife destruction by 66%, and water usage by 54%.
