The Unmapped Ocean is a 3D virtual gallery on MyGallery3D, a walkable online exhibition of 16 works. Step inside and explore it in your browser: no app, no headset.
Welcome to a 3D virtual gallery you can walk through in your browser, exploring the vast ocean we have barely begun to map. The ocean covers 70.8% of Earth's surface, yet as of 2024, just over 26% of the ocean floor has been mapped at higher resolution than satellites provide. Some estimate only 5% has been explored at all.
Beneath the surface lies the longest mountain range on the planet, over 65,000 kilometres of mid-ocean ridge, dwarfing the Andes. Most of this terrain remains unseen by human eyes.
Below about 200 metres, sunlight fails. The rest of the ocean is cold, dark, and largely unknown. The aphotic zone stretches to trenches over 10,000 metres deep. Life persists even there: organisms create their own light through bioluminescence. Hydrothermal vents and cold seeps act as oases, supporting unique biomes. New microbes and lifeforms are discovered at these sites regularly. The deeper ocean remains effectively unexplored.
Coral reefs occupy less than 0.1% of the ocean floor yet shelter at least 25% of all marine species. Shallow tropical reefs have declined by 50% since 1950. Rising ocean temperatures drive mass bleaching, which killed 29 to 50 percent of the Great Barrier Reef's coral in 2016 alone. Without their symbiotic algae, corals starve. Their calcium carbonate skeletons erode, and entire reef structures collapse.
