Strangers on the Street, Caught

Welcome to a 3D virtual gallery you can walk through in your browser, exploring the art of street photography: pictures of strangers caught unposed in public places.

In 1838, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre captured the first photograph of a human figure on a Paris boulevard. The man was only visible because he stood still long enough to have his boots polished. He has no head or body in the image, because those parts were in motion. Every street photograph since descends from that ghost.

The Camera That Changed Everything

First sold in 1925, the Leica was compact enough to move through crowds and sharp enough to freeze a gesture. Henri Cartier-Bresson painted its shiny parts black to stay invisible. Walker Evans strapped a 35mm Contax to his chest beneath his coat, connected to a wire down his sleeve, to make secret portraits on the New York subway from 1938 to 1941.
